He married Dorothy S. Errickson on 27 June 1942 in New Jersey. The following obituary was published in The Times, Trenton, NJ, 8 Apr. 2009: V. Leroy Skillman, Jr., 89, of Monroe Township passed away Sunday in the University Medical Center at Princeton. He was born in the Blawenburg/Skillman area of Montgomery Township, Somerset County on a farm that is now part of Cherry Valley Golf Club. Mr. Skillman was a graduate of Somerville High School and a 1940 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance. At Penn, he was a Vice President and Chaplain of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, violinist in the Symphony Orchestra and a Junior Varsity wrestler. In 1942, he married Dorothy Stetler Errickson and settled in her hometown of Dayton. In 1988, the Skillman's moved to Presbyterian Homes Monroe Village in Monroe Township, Middlesex County. Roy served twice as the Residence Association President. Mr. Skillman worked for 15 years for Calco/American Cyanamid, including three years of Army military service from 1943-1946. In 1956, he left American Cyanamid and joined his father-in-law, W. Everett Errickson's Fire and Casualty Insurance Agency in Dayton, retiring in 1980 as a General Partner. During this time, some years were spent on the Board of Directors of the NJ Mutual Insurance Agents Association and on the Board of Directors of the Southern Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce. As a Dayton resident, his community activities included Board of Education of South Brunswick Township, President of the Dayton Elementary School PTA, Manager of Recreation league baseball teams, and a member of the Lions Club. With his special interest in baseball, Mr. Skillman became a Certified NJ High School baseball and softball umpire. He was President of the Central NJ Umpires Association and the Board of Directors of the New Jersey High School Umpires Association. Mr. Skillman served the Dayton Presbyterian Church at various times as Elder, Clerk of Session, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Church School Superintendent and Choir Member. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Errickson Skillman; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert L. and Barbara Skillman of Surprise, AZ and Kenneth and Nancy Skillman of Hillsborough; one sister, Dorothy Seyfarth of Virginia; four grandchildren, Suzanne Finkenbine and Matthew Skillman, Rebecca Robinson, and Abigail Hamilton, and eight great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dayton Cemetery, Dayton. Note: Heartfelt thanks to John Smolarek for creating this memorial and to Leigh Miller for the gravestone image.
