Vurl Lester Omanson was born on Jan 20, 1928, to Lee and Hulda Omanson on a farm north of Canova, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Oliver, Wilbur, Ralph, and an infant brother. He attended grade school in the Canova area. Omanson, 86, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls on Apr 30, 2014. Vurl Lester Omanson was born on Jan 20, 1928, to Lee and Hulda Omanson on a farm north of Canova, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Oliver, Wilbur, Ralph, and an infant brother. He attended grade school in the Canova area. Vurl worked on the family farm along with his three brothers. In the fall of 1951, Vurl entered the US Army serving in Korea. He was in the 73rd heavy tank division as staff sergeant, being discharged in 1952. After his discharge he came back to Canova, where he farmed with his brother, Ralph. They also did a lot of painting. In Apr 1960, he moved to Sioux Falls where he was employed by Olson Painting. He married Edith Olsen in Apr, 1964. He lived a very quiet Christian life, being a Charter Member of Faith Baptist Church. Many hours were spent volunteering for churches and various organizations. Some of his favorite past times were: attending farm and antique sales, going to gospel concerts, watching John Wayne movies and Lawrence Welk shows, and restoring antique furniture and old horse machinery. The summer of 2012, Vurl was voted 'Straw Boss', the Grand Marshall of the Granite Threshers Parade. This was an honor which meant a lot to him. Vurl is survived by: his wife, Edith; one son, Brian (Larry); sisters-in-law, Opal Omanson and Fern Omanson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Mon, May 5, 2014, at Sun Prairie Baptist Church, rural Salem, SD. Memorials may be directed to Faith Baptist Youth Mission Trips or The Master's Voice Quartet. Arrangements were with the Kinzley Funeral Home, Salem, SD.
