Description	:	W. C. (Newt) Rush was born May 26, 1900 in Hawarden, Iowa and passed away Aug. 21 at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 25 days at the Hawarden Hospital. Mr. Rush was educated in the Hawarden Public Schools. On July 31, 1924 he was united in marriage to Esther Kusch at Le Mars, Iowa. To this union was born six children, three boys and three girls. (Newt) Rush was born May 26, 1900 in Hawarden, Iowa and passed away Aug. 21 at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 25 days at the Hawarden Hospital. Mr. Rush was educated in the Hawarden Public Schools. On July 31, 1924 he was united in marriage to Esther Kusch at Le Mars, Iowa. To this union was born six children, three boys and three girls. He was first employed by the City of Hawarden, April 11, 1922 as a lineman. July 8, 1926, he was named Superintendent of Utilities. In 1936 he was appointed to the position of Superintendent of Public Works and he retired in October 1969. Mr. Rush served 29 years as a member of the Hawarden Volunteer Fire Dept., the last year as Chief of the Department. He served 2 years as Sioux County Civil Defense Director. He was one of the original organizers of the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, serving as president of the association during 1969. He was an associate member of the Northwest Iowa Mayor's Association. He served 9 years as a member of the Hawarden School Board, 1943-1952, the last six years as president of the board. In 1965 he was named to the original board of trustees and one of the founders of Sioux Empire College. He was named to the first Who's-Who in Iowa in 1941. In 1966 he was given the citizen of the year award by the Chamber of Commerce. Newt was a member of International Rotary, Odd Fellows and Eagle lodges, and Hawarden Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hawarden. The survivors include the widow, Esther; sons William of Sheldon, IA, Robert of Chicago, IL, Paul of Ballwin, Mo.; daughters Dorothy Jean, Mrs. Bob Smith of Blakely; Georgia Charlene, Mrs. David Anderson of Storm Lake, Iowa; Patricia, Mrs. James Wall of Alta, Ia.; 17 grandchildren and many friends and relatives.
