Description	:	William Henry Gentner, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Gentner, was born at Zanesville, Ohio, Jan. 14, 1854. He moved with his parents when he was one year old at Lancaster, Mo., where he was batized in infancy by Rev. Pfister. Likewise he was confirmed at the age of fourteen in the Lutheran church there. He likewise studied one year to prepare himself for the ministry but because of... Read More	William Henry Gentner, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Gentner, was born at Zanesville, Ohio, Jan. 14, 1854. He moved with his parents when he was one year old at Lancaster, Mo., where he was batized in infancy by Rev. Pfister. Likewise he was confirmed at the age of fourteen in the Lutheran church there. While still in his youth, Mr. Gentner taught school for two years near Lancaster, following which he attended college two years at Carthage college of Carthage, Ill., to further his education. He likewise studied one year to prepare himself for the ministry but because of the condition of his health at the time gave up the endeavor. Following his studies he took up telegraphy and became depot agent at Lancaster for eight years. He later moved to Farmington, Iowa, where he bought a small grocery store in 1855, which business grew to what it is today. On March (13), 1880, Mr. Gentner was united in marriage at Glenwood, Mo., to Miss Laura Frances Hays of Lancaster. To this union four children were born, three of them, Earl, Fred, and Parin, having preceded him in death. Likewise is he preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters of whom he was the youngest of seven. Mr. Gentner is survived by his wife, also by his son, William Henry, Jr., and wife of Farmington, besides a host of friends. Mr. Gentner passed away after about a week's illness at his home on Saturday, Sept. 24, 1932, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 20 days. He has been for a number of years a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge, as well as from 45 to 48 years a member of the Masonic lodge. Mr. Gentner's parents were very religious and he was raised from his youth in a religious atmosphere. He was strict in his love for Christ, good to his family and known in the community for his honesty and integrity. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the late home, the Rev. Martensen of Primrose church officiating. The Masonic order had charge of the services at the grave in the Green Glade cemetery at Farmington. - - - - The attendance at the funeral was unusually large, friends being present from several of the adjacent towns and rural communities. The W.H. Gentner store was well known throughout the southeastern part of the state. He was a believer in consistent and continuous newspaper advertising and had been a customer and patron of this paper for about thirty years. The death of Mr. Gentner came as a surprise and shock to the community. Although he had been in failing health for some time his condition was not considered serious and his death was to his friends quite unexpected, passing away peacefully at his home early Saturday morning. - - - - - Source: Van Buren Co.
