"You asked for info on Waddie Adams and Alice Caudill. I work for a museum in NC and have been doing research on the 1916 flood. Here is what I know about Waddie and Alice. I spoke with Famon's grandson Lennie to make sure I had my facts straight. Alice and Famon Caudill lived a cabin about a mile downstream from his father Martin in Basin Cove, Wilkes County. (Martin’s cabin is The Caudill Cabin visible today from Wildcat Rocks overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway.) At the time of the 1916 flood, Famon was working for the Virginia-Carolina Railroad Company in Green Cove, Virginia. Alice, pregnant, was at home with her mother, Waddie Adams, and her 9-year-old brother-in-law Cornelus. As the flood waters came down Basin Cove they swept the cabin downstream, killing the three occupants. Alice is buried at the bottom of Basin Cove near the foundation of Basin Cove Primitive Baptist Church. Cornelus’ body was found later. Waddie’s body was never found. Famon was on his way home two weeks after the flood and heard about the death of his wife and unborn child while at a general store. Upon returning home the only object he found was the brown milk pitcher he had given Alice as a wedding present in January. The pitcher now resides at the Wilkes Heritage Museum. The 1916 flood completely destroyed the Basin Cover community, washing away cabins, crops, and livestock. Most families moved away. When the Blue Ridge parkway was built in the 1930s, only eight families were living in the cove. Do Waddie and Alice have tombstones at New Covenant Baptist Church Cemetery?
