Description	:	Waldo Cass Hendershott (age 84) of Usk, Washington, passed away at home January 18, 2009. He was born September 4, 1924 in Usk, Washington, to Cass and Edna (Boring) Hendershott. He was born September 4, 1924 in Usk, Washington, to Cass and Edna (Boring) Hendershott. While growing up, he attended the Usk School where he played basketball. His first job was in the woods with his father, Cass, felling trees with a crosscut saw. As a young man he also worked for the U.S. Forest Service, where he strung telegraph line to fire watchtowers. In 1942, at the tender age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought for America during World War II. He served as a coxswain on both the USS Copahee (CVE-12), an escort carrier, and the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14), a seaplane tender. While enlisted in the US Navy, he met and married the love of his life, Pearl Johnson. They were married in Vancouver, Washington, August 28, 1944. He was honorably discharged November 5, 1945. After the Navy, he worked for two years in Portland, Oregon, in the forest industry and then returned home to Usk with Pearl. Waldo continued to work in the forest industry, including the Diamond Match Mill in Cusick, Washington. In 1957, he purchased his own truck and began working as a truck driver. In 1959, he started a successful logging business, Hendershott Logging. In addition to the logging business, Waldo and Pearl also owned the Triangle Cafe (now the Crossroads) from 1967 to 1970. In 1984, the bottom fell out of the timber industry and Hendershott Logging closed. Waldo and Pearl relocated to Provost, Utah, where he found a job changing tires. Later he started in the oil industry as an employee of the Anschutz Oil Company, first as a truck driver and later as lead foreman. His duties included checking oil tank levels and monitoring tanker truck metering. In 1987, Waldo retired from the oil fields and returned with Pearl to Usk. He reopened Hendershott Logging and continued to log until he retired again in 1999. Not one to sit still, he cut his retirement short and worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a grounds and maintenance man and later worked in parks and recreation. From 2005 to 2007, he worked at Walmart as a maintenance man. In 2007, Waldo finally retired for good. Waldo and Pearl also raised four children together: Robert, Kathy, Thomas and Sandra in Usk, Washington. Waldo adored his children and was very active in his children's upbringing. Waldo spent much time with them by supporting their sports activities, such as little league baseball, football, and high school sports. He donated the poles and got the PUD to donate the installation of the lights that enabled the Cusick High School to hold their first night football games at Wagner Field. Waldo was a person who would help anyone out. Family and friends would often come to him for support and he could always be counted on to help. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, sightseeing, genealogy, and visiting relatives. He always had a good story to tell. Waldo was formerly a member of the American Legion Post 217 and was a current member of the Newport Eagles Aerie 3433. Waldo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Pearl (1997); his son, Robert Hendershott (1988); two brothers, Clarence and Vance Hendershott; and two sisters, Gertrude Wright and Violet Aipperspach. He is survived by brothers: Ronald (Shirley) Hendershott Sr. of Usk and Norman (Ruth) Hendershott Sr. of Elk; sisters: Margaret (Terry) Demers of Renton and Lila Ewing of Cusick. His children: Kathy (Loyd) Hastings of Usk, Thomas Hendershott of Cusick and Sandra (Lawson) Kaler II of Usk; 12 Grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Friday, January 23, 2009, at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Washington at 11:00 a.m.. There will be an interment immediately following the service at the Newport Cemetery. There will be a dinner following the interment at the Cusick American Legion Post 217, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 217.
