Wally Hoechst, who had been in front with speeds approaching 80 miles an hour, was seriously injured in a double collision on the 29th lap. In passing Al Rennick of Bismarck on the south turn, he hit the fence and flipped. Then Ed Ricker of Mandan ran into the car, colliding on the drivers side. Hoechst, leading driver of Minot's Nodak Racing Club, sustained seven cracked ribs, a collapsed left lung and a dislocated right hip. With a crowd of over 1,000 watching, Claude Hanson took the lead after the track was cleared. But Nikitenko went ahead and Hanson ended second, Elmer Gardsmoe third, Al Marcks of Garrison fourth, Jim Highbe of Garrison fifth and Bud Bechtold sixth. Following Sunday's club competition, Hoechst had 175 points, Nikitenko 165 and Lawrence Pfau 160. Hoechst had won the fourth heat race and the trophy dash - his 12th of the year - Monday and the feature, time trials and trophy dash Sunday. Four more Sunday's remain in the NRC season. Proceeds of next Sunday's program will go to Hoechst. (The Minot Daily News, September 6, 1955, pg. 15) ************************** HOECHST RITES SET FOR MONDAY Services for Waldo Hoechst, 28, will be at Augustana Lutheran church, Minot, Monday at 2 p.m. Rites will be conducted by the Rev. Chester Johnson. Burial will be at Rosehill cemetery. Mr. Hoechst, hospitalized after a collision during a stock car race on the North Dakota State fairgrounds Labor Day, died Thursday as a result of his injuries. He was the leading driver of the Nodak Race Club on points earned during the season. A memorial benefit race Sunday will honor his contributions to the club. Proceeds will go to the Hoechst family. Besides his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hoechst of Sawyer, he is survived by his wife, Verna, and four children. The latter are Richard Waldo, 8; Lonnie Dale, 4; Mark Wallace, 1; Vernelle Lars Otto, 1 month; and his grandfather, Robert Klimpel of Minot. Mr. Hoechst was employed at Main Motors as an automobile mechanic. He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran church and treasurer of the Nodak Race Club. Friends may call at the Thomas Funeral Home until noon Monday when the body will be taken to the church for reviewal prior to the services only. Organist will be Mrs. Richard Ydstie and Harley Frantsen of Kongsberg, a senior at Dakota Lutheran academy, will sing.
