Description	:	Wallace B. "Wally" Hanson, age 83, died Friday, February 1, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital. Wallace B. Hanson was born Mar. 23, 1924 in Kingsbury County, SD, the son of Arthur N. and Irma (Bickett) Hanson. He graduated from Oldham High School and served in World War II with the Eighth Army. "Wally" Hanson, age 83, died Friday, February 1, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital. Wallace B. Hanson was born Mar. 23, 1924 in Kingsbury County, SD, the son of Arthur N. and Irma (Bickett) Hanson. He graduated from Oldham High School and served in World War II with the Eighth Army. He attended SDSU and graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking. Wally married Arlis Buesing at Marshall, MN on June 18, 1949 and they moved to Madison. He worked at Norwest Bank (now Wells Fargo) for 35 years in Madison and served as vice president and manager for 15 years before retiring in 1984. In retirement he worked for the SD Dept. of Agriculture as financial advisor during the 1980's farm crisis. He was a SD State Senator from 1980-90 and served on the Appropriations Committee for eight years. He served as Sec.-Treas. of the Karl E. Mundt Foundation for 25 years. Wally was an active member of the United Methodist Church and served on many committees over the years. He gave his service to the Kiwanis Club, Bethel Lutheran Home Board, Madison Community Hospital, Chamber of Commerce Education Board, DSU Foundation, American Red Cross Board, Lake Co. Republican Central Committee, Prairie Repertory Theatre Board, American Legion, Madison Country Club, Isaac Walton League, Elks Club, Masonic Lodge and El Riad Shrine. He was awarded the DSU Distinguished Service Award and Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. Wally played semi-pro baseball with the Madison Broncos and played baseball and basketball with the Madison and Oldham independent teams. He enjoyed athletics of all kinds and was strong supporter of local athletic programs. He was a Founder of the Little League program in Madison. He also enjoyed financial counseling, bridge, traveling, gardening, lawn work and time spent with his family. Wally was preceded in death by his parents; son Craig; an infant daughter; and two brothers Kermit and Byron Hanson. Wally is survived by his wife Arlis of Madison; one son, Dr. Derrill (Lonna) Hanson of Madison; two daughters, Melanie (Wally) Doppenberg of Thomasville, GA and Kay (Bryan) Eder of Rochester, MN; his grandchildren, Jared and Janna (children of Derrill), Kinlin, Brad and Whitney (children of Craig), Tia, Jennifer and Erick, (children of Melanie) Chase and Ty (sons of Kay) and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Imogene Beard of San Antonio, TX and Lois Johnson of Flandreau; and two sisters-in-law, Marian Hanson of Huron and Mary Buesing of Peoria, IL.
