Rehfuss Lays Aside a Friendly and Able Physician and Surgeon-- A Good Citizen This town deeply mourns the loss of one of its most outstanding citizens, in the sudden death at 10'clock Sunday afternoon, of Wallace Norman Rehfuss, M.D., C.M., F.A.C.S., recognized as one of Nova Scotia's most skillful surgeons and physicians. Dr. Rehfuss, who has suffered from a heart ailment for several years past, has been seriously ill for the past two weeks. His condition was quite critical during the first week, but he had so improved during the second week that hopes had been held for his recovery. Dr. Rehfuss, who was a member of the Rhodes Government from 1925 to 1928 as minister without portfolio, was born in 1876 at Conquerall Bank and had he lived until November 27th., would have been 63 years old. He graduated from the public schools at Conquerall Bank and Bridgewater, and received his arts degree from Greenville College, Pa. He graduated in medicine from McGill University, Montreal, in 1903. The same year he started in to practise at Bridgewater in association with Dr. C.S. Marshall and N.P. Freeman. A few years later he opened up his own office. The late doctor was actively associated with the Dawson Memorial Hospital and was largely responsible for its establishment. He was chairman of the Board of Management for some time. He also took an active part in the community life of the town, being a generous supporter of all movements tending to its welfare. The deceased was for many years a member of the Town Council. He was Provisional President of the Kiwanis Club at the time of its organization and was a Past President of the Board of Trade. Previous to his health beginning to fail he was an ardent member of the Bridgewater Curling Club of which he was a Past President and honourary member. He was a member of Acacia Lodge, A.F. & A.M. and a Shriner of Phili Temple. In 1925, he was President of the Nova Scotia Medical Society and at one time held the post of Vice-President of the Nova Scotia Conservative Association. He was also a member of the Lunenburg-Queens Medical Society. Dr. Rehfuss was much interested in the work of the Girl Guide movement and gave a generous donation toward the building of their fine cabin. The deceased kept continually in touch with all modern methods in surgery and medicine and attended the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, New York on several occasions. He dedicated his life to his profession. He never refused aid to anyone in need, whether in a medical way or any other way, being of a very generous nature. In his younger days, Dr. Rehfuss was an outstanding athlete at McGill. As halfback on the football team he was one of its strongest players. He always took a keen interest in local sporting activities, contributing freely to their financial support. Dr. Rehfuss, who had the largest practice of any doctor in the country, was known as a deep thinker and a gifted orator, being equally able in extemporaneous as well as prepared addresses. He always drew large audiences and never refused a request to speak if possible. Besides his wife, who was before her marriage, Pauline Marshall, daughter of Dr. M.G.E. Marshall, of Annapolis Royal, he is survived by one daughter, Margaret, who was married two weeks ago today to Dr. Henry C. Barnaby, and who is now living at Glen Cove, Long Island, New York; also two brothers, Philip of Bridgewater; and Otto of Montreal; and two sisters, Stella (Mrs. Myles Peck), of Bridgewater; and Florence (Mrs. Arthur Clements), of Montreal. He was predeceased by one brother, Captain Alton and a sister, Hattie. Dr. Rehfuss was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip Rehfuss and was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
