King was born on Nov. 15, 1922, to George and Barbara (Lusk) King of Highmore, S.D. He grew up in the area and graduated from Highmore High School in 1940. He attended Huron College until entering the U.S. Army on Dec. 1, 1942. He served in the European Theater during World War II and was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1946. His military service to his country continued with the South Dakota National Guard for the next 20 years. Wally, as his friends knew him, attained the rank of captain. He married Lorraine Bertsch on June 25, 1948, in Hot Springs, S.D. Wally worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital until his transfer to the Indian Health Service in Aberdeen during 1960. Wallace retired from federal service in 1979, but continued to live an active life working part time and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. He bowled on numerous leagues, golfed, played bridge and was active with the Aberdeen Senior Center. Wally was an expert pool player. He loved to hunt pheasants with his family and was an outstanding marksman. His passion for gardening has been passed on to his children and grandchildren. Wally was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. He was devoted to his family, leaving them the best part of himself; faithfulness to God and each other, as well as the attributes of honesty and fairness. He loved a great meal, a good bargain, a funny story, but above all, his wife, Lorraine. Grateful for having shared Wallace's life are his children: Carolyn "Kelly" (Lyle) Haselhorst, Faulkton, S.D., Ronald (Marilyn) King, Clinton, Ind., Kathryn (Dell) Petersen, Rapid City, S.D., and Dianna (Gary) Kopetsky, Frederick, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Drew; and one brother, Melvin King. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; his parents; one sister; and one great-grandson.
