"Wally" Wilken, 85, of Clarksville and formerly of Plainfield, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center of cancer. "Wally" Wilken, 85, of Clarksville and formerly of Plainfield, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center of cancer. Wally was born on December 3, 1929, on a farm in rural Clarksville, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Malinda (Klunder) Wilken. Wally attended country school at Fremont #4, rural Clarksville through the 8th grade. Following his schooling he helped his parents on the farm and also worked at Oliver's in Charles City. On December 3, 1951, Walter entered the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged on November 12, 1953. Following his discharge, Wally returned home and continued to farm. On February 24, 1956, Wally was united in marriage to Donna M. Hartema in Austin, Minnesota. The couple farmed from 1956 until 1977, and Wally also worked for the Waverly Sale Barn from 1968 until he retired in 2010. While at the sale barn Wally worked as general laborer and checked in all of the livestock at the auctions. Wally was a member of First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, Iowa, where he served on several boards. He was a lifetime member of the Clarksville Amvets Post 30 and Farm Bureau. Wally was an avid horse admirer and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Wally is survived by his wife, Donna Wilken of Plainfield, one daughter, Rita (Kaye) Ohrt of Plainfield; one son, Randall (Vicki) Wilken of Waverly; four grandchildren, Kyle Ohrt, Kayla Ohrt, Clayton (Jackie) Wilken and Caleb (Alli Zwanziger) Wilken; and one sister, Violet Freerks of Clarksville. Wally is also survived by his surrogate grandchildren, Hart and Mallory Kutzner. Who always made "Grandpa Wally" smile and laugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and his wife, Vernon and Bonnie Wilken and brother-in-law, Oliver Freerks. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 10:30 am at First United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, with Pastor Peter Wenzel officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery with Military rites conducted by the Clarksville Amvets, Post 30. Public visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
