Description	:	Walter A. Doerschlag Jr., 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. He was born June 5, 1922, in Ransom, to Walter A. Sr. and Caroline Johannes Doerschlag. He grew up in Ransom, graduated from Ransom High School, and attended Fort Hays State College and Kansas University. Mr. Doerschlag was stationed in England during World War II and served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corp. He was shot down on his 23rd mission and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was born June 5, 1922, in Ransom, to Walter A. Sr. and Caroline Johannes Doerschlag. He grew up in Ransom, graduated from Ransom High School, and attended Fort Hays State College and Kansas University. Mr. Doerschlag was stationed in England during World War II and served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corp. He was shot down on his 23rd mission and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart medals. A big band trumpeter, he toured with the Tommy Dorsey band for a summer. He also was a rancher, a real estate broker, a Lane County Commissioner for 15 years and served as the Democratic Party Chairman. On Sept. 21, 1946, he married Doris Jean Ross in Enid, Okla. She died in 1989. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert; and a sister, Noreen Doerschlag. Survivors include three sons, James L. Doerschlag of Ulysses, Gerald L. Doerschlag of Berthoud, Colo., and John Doerschlag of Hays; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses. Graveside service was at Ransom Cemetery, with military rites performed by the Ransom Veterans of American Legion, Brownell American Legion and the Brownell Sons of the American Legion.
