Read More	******************************************** Fremont Tribune (NE) - Saturday, May 31, 2003 The funeral for Walter Brand, 85, of Wisner will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner. He died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Wisner Care Center. He was born July 28, 1917, at Dixon, S.D. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Cuming County Rural School District 44 and graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1935. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked with them in the Black Hills of South Dakota. On April 2, 1942, he entered the United States Army and was stationed with the 90th Infantry Division. While in service, he took part in the Normady Invasion on Utah Beach, serving under General George Patton. He received four major battle stars as well as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Other military honors include Infantry Rifleman's Badge, Bronze Arrow Head for the Invasion and an award for being in direct command of combat troops. He was discharged Oct. 22, 1945. He married Herda Bloedom Feb. 11, 1946, in Wisner. The couple farmed for 14 years and in 1960 bought Toole's Tavern and renamed it W&H Tavern. They owned and operated the tavern until retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wisner VFW 5767 and American Legion Post 85. He served on the school boards for Cuming County Rural School Districts 17 and seven. He was also a past member of the Wisner Fire Department. Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Beverly Meyer of Fremont; a son, Roger (and wife, Alice) Brand of Wisner; two sisters, Henrietta Donnelly of North Platte and Esther (Mrs. Bud) Schuster of Hershey; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, a grandson and a great-grandson. The Rev. James P. Carretto will officiate Monday's service. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner and will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Burial will be in Wisner Cemetery with military rites by VFW 5767 and American Legion Post 85.
