Walt was born in Blackstone, Virginia on October 8th, 1944, son of the late Walter Lynwood Jones and Anna Gertrude “Trudy” Haskins Jones. Walt was born in Blackstone, Virginia on October 8th, 1944, son of the late Walter Lynwood Jones and Anna Gertrude “Trudy” Haskins Jones. Walt was survived by his wife, Sylvia Phelps Jones; one daughter, Jennifer Jones (and Dixon) Harrill; one son, Peter Lynwood Jones; one step-daughter, Jamie Eller (and Jason) Patrick; five grandchildren, Andrew Walter Gavre, John Christopher Gavre, Evelyn Taylor Jones, Alyda Zehmer Jones, and Olivia Maddux Jones; three step-grandchildren, all of whom he adored; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lynwood Jones, who departed this life on December 3rd, 1984 and Gertrude “Trudy” Jones, who departed this life on July 8th, 1996; and one sister, Anne Lynwood "Ann" Jones Belsha, who departed this life on August 23rd, 2007. Walt grew up on his family farm in Laurel Branch, in rural Southside Virginia. The farm has been in the Jones family for over 275 years and was an important part of his family heritage. He graduated from Kenbridge High School in 1962 and was a proud 1967 graduate of the College of William and Mary. He continued his education at North Carolina State University, obtaining his Masters Degree in 1973. Walt was a life-long educator, serving as the Dean of Men at Louisburg College before he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1973 and spent 30 years working in various capacities in the University Career Center at North Carolina State. He retired as Director of the Career Center in 2003. Walt was dedicated to helping young adults and loved his career in higher education. Additionally, Walt was an avid supporter of Wolfpack Athletics (Go Pack!) and a loyal fan through feast and famine, as he might say. In addition to his academic work, Walt was a tireless volunteer and civic leader. He was active in the Raleigh Lions' Club. Since retiring to Emerald Isle, North Carolina in 2005, Walt has served on various committees with the Swansboro Rotary Club, most recently on the Board of Directors. Additionally, Walt was serving as Vice-President of the Land's End Homeowner's Association. Walt also had a strong faith. He served on the Vestry and was a lay leader and active member at Saint Peter's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Swansboro. Walt had a very generous heart and could always be counted on to help a friend in need or serve those in the community. Never one to draw attention to himself, Walt was more comfortable serving quietly and humbly. He leaves a legacy of volunteerism and civic responsibility to his children and grandchildren to carry on in his absence. Walt was a gifted storyteller and was known for his warm wit and entertaining tales. He brought a smile to the face of nearly everyone he met. He enjoyed a round of golf with his friends most weeks since retiring and loved to spend time fishing in the surf or walking the beaches of his beloved Emerald Isle. Visitations were held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Saint Peter's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Swansboro, North Carolina on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015. Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's on Wednesday, June 24th, 2015. A reception followed the service at the Lands End neighborhood clubhouse. Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, Virginia. THIS IS A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF WALT, 1 Thessalonians 4. 16-18 (King James Version) 16.
