Born Sept. 3, 1934, in Seymour, Tenn., he was the son of the late Earl and Ruth (Thomas) Baker. On May 24, 1956, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he married Lola Florence Bilby, who survives him. He was a 1953 graduate of Tipton High School. In 1952 he joined the National Guard, and in September of 1953, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served three tours in Vietnam and also served in the Korean War. His medals included the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Mast awarded twice, Good Conduct medal with seven clusters, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He served in the Marine Corps for 23 years, retiring as a gunnery sergeant in June of 1976. He was then a staff advisor at Indiana University Kokomo from 1977 to 1999. He was the Tipton Seabee Club President from 1979 to 2000, where he helped raise funds to help various charities and people. He was the current commander of Tipton American Legion Post 46, a member of Tipton VFW Post. He also was a member and baptized at the Antioch Baptist Church in Sevierville, Tenn. Survivors include his wife, Lola Florence (Bilby) Baker, Kokomo; three sons, Mark and wife Kimberly Baker, Tipton, Timothy and wife Debbie Baker, Kokomo, and Michael Baker, Kokomo; three daughters, Karen and husband Danny Goodman, Mount Carmel, Ill., Janette and husband Dave Nelson, Billings, Mont., and Sandra Smith, Kokomo; two brothers, Alfred and wife Renate Roberts, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Adam and wife Beulah Roberts, Wabash; two sisters Bonnie Runyan, Kokomo, and Inez Cowan, Sneedsville, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Virginia Baker, Tipton; 17 grandchildren, Laura, Amanda, Bryana, Joy, Rachel, Dejuan, Jessie, Stephanie, Joshua, Jeremiah, Jessica, Nicholas, Nathan, Billy, Nikoa, Matthew and James; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Diana Fletcher; and one brother, Arvil Baker. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., Kokomo. The Rev. Raymond ?Popeye? Abbott will officiate. Burial with military rites by the U.S. Marine Corps, Tipton American Legion, VFW posts of Tipton and Kokomo and the Marine Corp League will follow in Tetersburg Cemetery, Tipton County. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
