Lee at his home in Blue Lake, Sunday evening at about 7:30 o'clock, Humboldt county lost one of its most respected pioneers. Death was not altogether unexpected, for deceased had been failing for some time as a result of a general breakdown and heart failure, and the end came as the peaceful passing of a long and useful career. Walter Campbell Lee was born in Nashville, Illinois, March 8, 1834, being 74 years, 4 months and 11 days of age at the time of his death. In 1852, when eighteen years of age, he crossed the plains to California, coming with his father's family of ten children. Of this family of pioneers four members survive, one of whom is Mr. Geo. C. Lee of Dow's Prairie, also L. W. Lee and Mrs. Isabel Cheshire, both of Butte county, and Mrs. Annie Durkee of Sonoma county. In the early days deceased was engaged in mining at Placerville, later removing to Nicholas and the Feather River country in Sutter county, where with his father he took up the vocation of stock raising and farming. In 1870 he was married to Minnie K. St. John, at Pleasant Grove, Sutter county, who with five children--two boys and three girls--are left to mourn his loss. The children's names are as follows: Geo. W. Lee, of Dow's Prairie; Walter C. Lee, of Sterling, Butte County; Mrs. Minnie K. Kern (sic-Curran), of Oakland, Cal., Miss (sic-Mrs.) Mabel Reckart, of Blue Lake; and Miss (sic-Mrs.) Eva Ayer, of Korbel. For the last 20 years deceased has been a resident of Humboldt County, being engaged in stock raising and farming at Dow's Prairie until the present year, when he gave up the active pursuits of life and came to Blue Lake to live. He had a wide circle of friends and all who knew him speak in the highest terms of his strict integrity, his kind disposition and his qualities as a citizen. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at Arcata Wednesday afternoon, Rev. C. P. Hessel officiating, interment being at Greenwood cemetery, Arcata." RJM: Walter was the son of George W. Lee and Mahala Griffin. On the 1900 Census, Walter's wife Minnie stated that she had five children born, five living; on the 1910 Census, Minnie stated that she had five children born, four living. Walter and Minnie's children were: Minnie Katherine (Lee) Curran (1871-1959); George W. Lee (1873-1961); Walter C. Lee (1875-1909); Mabel Amencia (Lee) Reckart (1876-1944); and Eva E. (Lee) Ayer (1886-1968).
