Born May 24, 1918, in Cove, he was the son of the late George A. and Mathilda M. (Georg) Hanft. He also was preceded in death by twin sons, Wayne Edward and Warren Edgar, the day of birth in 1952; one brother, Earl Hanft; and one sister, Savilla Hanft Fike Lennox. HANFT ACCIDENT — Walter Charles Hanft, 82, of 781 Griffith Road, Accident, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland. Born May 24, 1918, in Cove, he was the son of the late George A. and Mathilda M. (Georg) Hanft. He also was preceded in death by twin sons, Wayne Edward and Warren Edgar, the day of birth in 1952; one brother, Earl Hanft; and one sister, Savilla Hanft Fike Lennox. Walter was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Cove. He was baptized on June 24, 1918 by the late Rev. R.C. Franke, and confirmed on June IO, 1932, by the late Rev. Hugo H. Fickenscher. He and his wife cleaned the church for over 30 years. He was a farmer and laborer. Walter served with the 29th Division of the U.S. Army from April 17, 1941 to July 31, 1945. He participated in the Omaha Beach Landing at Normandy. The purple heart was awarded to him for injuries sustained near St. Lo, France. He was a life member of Accident Post 208, American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrtle (Friend) Hanft; one son, Carroll Hanft, Addison, Pa.; five daughters, Dorothy Needer, Timonium, Pauline Sherwood, Mount Nebo, W.Va., Juanita Higson, Cumberland, Elizabeth Beatty, Wake Forest, N.C., and Melrose Short, Haslet, Texas; one brother, Elmer Hanft, Accident; three sisters, Virginia Fike, Brunswick, Ohio, WALTER C. HANFT ACCIDENT Walter Charles Hanft, 82, of 781 Griffith Road, Accident, died Sunday at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, RA., Grantsville, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at St. John’s Lutheran Church, LCMS, Cove, Thursday at ll a.m. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.
