Walter Clarence Olson has been engaged in the automobile sales field since the beginning of his career, and Havre has been the center of his business activities during most of that time. A native of Amery, Wisconsin, he was born on August 26, 1903, son of Charles William and Flora E. (Paulson) Olson. His father is now retired after farming for many cars in the Hogeland community. He was a dairy farmer in Wisconsin before coming to Montana. The family arrived in Montana in Walter C. Olson's early youth, and he attended grade school in what was known as the Silver Bow community and graduated from the Harlem High School where he majored in business administration. He began his business career in the automotive field. His first position was with the Ford Agency in Harlem, where be was responsible for the accounting, the purchasing of parts and accessories and the sale of cars and tractors. In 1928 he came to Havre and there engaged in the same kind of work with Valley Motor Company. This continued until 1936, when, in association with a partner, he purchased the stock of the original owner of the Valley Motor Supply Company. Since that time Valley Motor Supply Company has expanded and now operates fifteen branch stores, located in various communities in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. The original Valley Motor Company, which Mr. Olson and his partner acquired, was first incorporated as an automobile dealership in 1926, selling Pontiac and Oakland cars, and doing general repair work. The Havre agency, headquarters of this prosperous chain of automotive parts, accessories, equipment and supplies business is located at 115-First Street in Havre, Montana. Mr. Olson is a stockholder in the Citizens Bank of Montana, the KOJM Broadcasting Station and a real estate firm. A Republican in his politics, aside from his activities as a member of the Board of Education of School District No. 166, and as chairman of that board for part of that period, he has never sought nor accepted candidacy for public office. He is a Mason, identified with Havre Lodge No. 55, and a member of the Scottish Rite body. Although not now a Kiwanian, he was for some years identified with that club, and was president of the Havre Club in 1945. He and his family are members of First Lutheran Church. In addition to activities mentioned, Mr. Olson is a member of the board of directors of the National Standard Parts Association, has served on several committees of the association in the past several years, served as president of the Havre Chamber of Commerce in 1954 and has served on the board oi directors of the Kennedy Deaconess Hospital. At Hogeland, Montana, on March 1, 1926, Walter Clarence Olson married Mildred Louise Knutson, daughter of K. B. and Ida (Bergren) Knutson. Her father was a farmer in the Silver Bow and Hogeland community. Mr. and Mrs. Olson are the parents of two sons: 1. Charles Duane, born February 13, 1931. He is now with the Air Defense Group of the United States Air Force. He has recently returned front Tripoli after serving two and one-half years. overseas. 2. Eugene Wayne, who was born July 18, 1936, is now attending Northern Montana College at Havre, where he is majoring in business administration.
