Description	:	From the 1984 Lyons Heritage Book Walter, the eldest son of Milan and Clara Viles, was born March 15, 1889, on the old Southwell farm northeast of Lyons, homesteaded by his grandparents, Joseph and Jane Morter Southwell, amonthe early settlers here in 1867. On May 22, 1912, he married Sadie Pearl Kiefer, daughter of Burt County pioneers, Cyrus and Susan Kiefer. They farmed for several years before moving into town, where Walter had a dray line for seven years. On May 22, 1912, he married Sadie Pearl Kiefer, daughter of Burt County pioneers, Cyrus and Susan Kiefer. They farmed for several years before moving into town, where Walter had a dray line for seven years. In 1937, he became manager of Holmquists' Elevator here, and remained in that capacity until his health forced retirement in the late 1960's. Walter was well known in the grain trade over Eastern Nebraska and among farmers and feeders in several counties. The Southwells were active members of the Methodist Church. In early years he was active in the Lyons bands, Internatioal Order of Odd Fellows. They observed their 60th wedding anniversay in 1972, just two days prior to Walter's death on May 24. They had four children, all graduates of Lyons High School: Vera, Orville, Dale and Elton.
