Stemm's body was discovered by his mother, Myrtle, about two hours after his father, Walter, 62, was found dead in the family home Sunday. The elder Stemm apparently died in his sleep from natural causes. The family said he had been ill at least a week. Services for Walter Stemm and his son, Clarence, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Stemm farm home. Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery. The Sorden and Adams funeral home of Lone Tree is in charge. Walter Ernest Stemm was born April 25, 1896, the son of George and Catharine Weiss Stemm. He married Myrtle Brandt. Surviving besides the widow, are two sons, Alvin H. and Elwood R. Stemm, both at home; and the following brothers and sisters; John and Mary Stemm, both of West Liberty, Minnie and Bertha Stemm, both of Iowa City; and Clarence and Albert Stemm, both of Lone Tree. Walter Stemm was preceded in death by a son Clarence M. Stemm; a sister, Elizabeth B. Stemm, and a brother (uncle) , Adam Stemm. Surviving Clarence M. Stemm's death are his mother and two brothers, Alvin and Elwood Stemm, both at home. The elder Mr. Stemm was found dead in bed and the body of Clarence, with a .22 caliber wound in the head, was lying at water tank with the head in the water. Constable Harold Wright of Lone Tree was aiding Johnson county officials on the investigation. Stemm farmed 160 acres 11 miles southeast of here with two other sons besides Clarence. They are Alvin, 33, and Elwood, 25, who were at the farm when Clarence's body was found. Elwood told authorities he heard a gunshot at 7:05 a.m. Sunday. The body was found 30 minutes later. Also present at the farm were two sisters of the elder Stemm. They were Clara and Minnie Stemm who recently refused to bury dead cattle on their farm until ordered by authorities. County Attorney William Tucker said if Clarence's wounds "was self-inflicted we have no problem. "We're not ready to call it suicide yet," Sheriff Pat Murphy said Monday. Stemm, who farmed with his father and two bothers 11 miles southeast of here, also was shot in the head with a .22 caliber gun. Death was attributed to drowning. Such a gun and a note, which read, "Look for me in east end of the north stock tank" were found on the farm Monday, about 75 feet from the stock tank. Stemm's body was found shortly after his father, Walter E. Stemm, 63, was discovered dead in the family house. He apparently died of natural causes.
