First of rural Hopkinton died October 12 at the Senior Home, Monticello, following a brief illness. Walter Eugene First was born June 22, 1893 at Cass Center, Jones County,Iowa, the son of Byron E. and Elisa Simpson First. He received his education in the rural schools of Delaware County near his home. Walter E. First and Margaret Reuter were married at Marion. The couple lived and worked on a farm near Marion for several years. They later moved to Monticello where Pete worked at the Ford Dealership. In 1922 the couple farmed in Delaware County. Margaret preceded Pete in death on November 3, 1974. Pete maintained an active role on the farm until several weeks prior to his death. Pete is survived by three sons,Eugene First of Cedar Rapids,Clifford First of Delhi and Robert First of Hopkinton,seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. Casket bearers were Jack Chaplin, Herman Egger, Robert Lang, Gilbert Recker, Louis Slauson and Roman Welter. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello,was in charge of the arrangements.
