Description	:	Walter Westergard, 88, of Hawarden passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 at his home. Funeral service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will be at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden beginning at 12:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Walter Fredrick Westergard was born on October 30, 1922, in Washington Township near Hawarden, Iowa to Nick and Helena (Ronsiek) Westergard. He graduated from the eighth grade in 1935 from the Lush School in Washington Township which was followed by one year of confirmation school in District #9. He married Alma Wessels on January 1, 1947, in Grant Township near LeMars, Iowa by the late Rev. F.O. Bunge. Walter farmed all his life in Plymouth and Sioux Counties. He started out using mules and horses until tractors came along. He took great pride in his farm animals and his crops. Mules, horses, and dogs were his favorite animals, and he treated them as if they were humans. Walter at one time owned the biggest span of mules to go down the streets of Hawarden as they weighed 3,620 pounds. He had them in many parades in the surrounding towns besides using them for farm work. Walter was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church all of his life. He was also a member of the Saddle Club for more than 30 years. He had friends and acquaintances in all of the surrounding towns and counties. To tell you how many friends he had, he was casket bearer for 83 funerals over the years. Alma died October 4, 2003. At the time of his death, Walter continued to enjoy his trips to the farm. He will be missed by his sister, Leona Thode of Aurora, Illinois; nieces and nephews; and many friends; and most of all by his adopted family, Paul and Kay Ronspies. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alma, and 3 sisters, Gladys Waterman, Agnes Green and Velda Weyen. Obituary & Photo from Porter Funeral Home
