Jarding was born on March 4, 1915 to John and Philomina Jarding in Hanson County at Alexandria, South Dakota. He was raised on the farm and had six brothers and four sisters. He graduated from Alexandria High School, and he attended and graduated from South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD. Walter married Dorothy Hearnon, and they lived in Redfield, South Dakota where Walter was county agent. He entered the U.S. Army Infantry on September 8, 1942. A son, Jerry Walter, was born on March 24, 1944 to Walter and Dorothy. Jerry was only five months old at the time of his father's death. Lieutenant Walter F. Jarding was killed in action in France on August 20, 1944. A military honor guard accompanied Lt. Walter Jarding's body when it was returned from France in 1950. The honor guard remained until interment at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Alexandria, SD. Jerry Walter Zender wrote: My father’s death was extremely traumatic for my mother. My father's tour of duty was almost over when he was killed in action, which only magnified the grief for my mother and my grandmother, as well as other family and friends. All of the people who knew and loved him have told me that he was the nicest and kindest person they had ever met. Jerry relates that his aunt, one of Walter Jarding's older sisters, received a letter from a soldier expressing his grief over the death of Lt. Jarding. The soldier wrote that Lt. Jarding was loved and respected by all his men because he was so decent and treated all of them so well. Carol Kayser, niece of Walter Jarding, shares her memory: "Uncle Walt was a fun loving uncle and full of life in the eyes of his nieces and nephews." In the Alexandria Herald perhaps it was summed up best: Walter Jarding was the kind of young man no community can afford to lose— honest, moral, progressive, and dependable. He was thoughtful, generous and kind to the members of his family, and his bereft wife and son, and also his brothers and sisters are by his death deprived of the companionship and love of one who deserved the exalted place he held in their lives. The thought of war and fighting were alien and abhorrent to his nature, and he entered into it, not in a spirit of adventure, but to fulfill his duty and to not fail in sharing with other men of his age the responsibility of protecting the flag he loved and of safeguarding the liberties of his family and friends. May we never desecrate his memory by disloyalty to the country for which this valiant soldier surrendered his life. Walter's widow, Dorothy Hearnon Jarding, remarried a few years later, and her husband, Ozzie Zender, adopted Jerry because he it was difficult having a different last name than his younger siblings. Before he was adopted, his mother spoke to Walter’s family to receive their blessing. I will always appreciate the service and the sacrifice of Walter F. Jarding.
