Enlisted in the Navy on July 24, 1943, in Baltimore MD and following basic training reported aboard the newly commissioned USS Swearer (DE-186) on November 24, 1943. Attained the rate of Torpedoman's Mate Third Class (TM3c). Married Daris Edwards, daughter of Harry J. and Carrie Bickel Edwards, on October 19, 1945, in Loch Lynn Heights MD.
