Description	:	Walter George Winter, son of Robert and Leatha (Grove) Winter, was born April 9, 1935, at home near Plover, Iowa. He received his early education at a country school near Langdon, Iowa. Walter attended Spencer High School his freshman year. After the ninth grade, Walter had to stay home to work on the farm. Walter served in the United States Army beginning January 9, 1958, transitioned to standby reserve status on March 27, 1963, until he received an honorable discharge on December 31, 1963. Read More	Walter George Winter, son of Robert and Leatha (Grove) Winter, was born April 9, 1935, at home near Plover, Iowa. He received his early education at a country school near Langdon, Iowa. Walter attended Spencer High School his freshman year. After the ninth grade, Walter had to stay home to work on the farm. Walter served in the United States Army beginning January 9, 1958, transitioned to standby reserve status on March 27, 1963, until he received an honorable discharge on December 31, 1963. Walter completed a six-week duration of ordinance parts supply school. He was an Ordinance Supply Specialist in the Transportation Section during the period of August 4, 1958, to December 1959. On January 8, 1960, Walter received the Good Conduct Medal for demonstrating exemplary behavior and fidelity for period of service January 9, 1958, to January 8, 1960. Walter was a semi-truck driver for All American, CCC Trucking, and Spencer Freight until his retirement. He also worked part-time for area farmers. Walter enjoyed fishing, visiting with neighbors, and watching old westerns. Most of all, Walter loved attending his grandchildren's events and spending time with them and his family. Walter died on February 18, 2022, at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen; and sister, Vera. Surviving are four daughters, Tammy (Douglas) Falline of Everly, Iowa, Pamela (Dale) Blair of Everly, Iowa, Trudy (Keith Saunders) Hoffman of Glidden, Iowa, and Patricia (Stacy) Doyle of Hartley, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Victor (Gaye) Winter, Don (Margo) Winter, Edwin (Sue) Winter and Robert Winter, Jr., all of Spencer, Iowa; two sisters, Virginia (Ken) Bashore of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Barbara Sievers of Storm Lake, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
