Mr. Geurts was the son of John D. and Catherine Geurts and was born December 26, 1890 in Holland and came to the United States at the age of 20. October 22, 1914 he was married to Dena Den Hartog. Two daughters, Catherine and Hester were born to this union. For several years he operated a grocery store and restaurant and retired about two years ago. He and his wife recently opened the Tri-County Cafe here. Survivors include his wife, the daughters, Mrs. Catherine Van Loon and Mrs. Hester Geurts, Eddyville, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, all of Eddyville, two sisters, Mrs. Herman Vandepol, Lynville and Mrs. Edoss, Pella, and three brothers, Marinus Geurts, Sully, Forrest Geurts, Pella and John D Geurts, Prairie City. Services were held from the L.W. Klein Funeral Home Saturday, May 3, 1958 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Martin, pastor of the Eddyville Methodist Church officiating. Burial was made in Highland Cemetery. 2nd newspaper clipping Walter Geurts, 67, Has Fatal Attack While Driving Auto EDDYVILLE- (Special) Walter Geurts, 67, of Eddyville, suffered a fatal heart attack about 10:30 a.m. Thursday while driving his car from Oskaloosa to Eddyville. He had been affliced with a heart ailment for some time. The attack occurred when he was about 1 1/2 miles north of Eddyville, near the Dunwoody farm. He had just passed a truck driven by Clarence Van Toorn of Oskaloosa, and it is believed he was frightened in some way by an oncoming car at that moment. At any rate, the car he was driving suddenly went off the right side of the highway, down the embankment and about 100 feet into a plowed field. The car came to a stop in an upright position and undamaged in the least. Van Toorn, accompanied, by Carl Higgins, of Eddyville, who came along there at the time, walked over to the car and found Geurts dead. Frank Besco also assisted at the scene, according to Deputy Sheriff W.G. Sandage, who investigated. Geurts was born in Holland and came to the United States in 1910, settling in the Pella vicinity and moving to Eddyville a short time later. He was married to Dena Den Hartog in October, 1914. Survinving are his wife, tow daughters, Mrs. Truman Sutton and Mrs. Dick Van Loon, both of Eddyville.; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two brotheres, Marinus Geurts of Sully and Forrest Guerts of Pella; and two sisteres, Mrs. Herman VanderPol of Lynnville and Mrs. Ed Voss of Pella. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Klein funeral home in Eddyville, to be conducted by Rev. Robert Martin, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.
