Description	:	Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, New Hampshire Governor. He began his working life as a schoolteacher and in 1849, was elected to the New Hampshire state legislature as the representative. As a Democrat, he served as State Treasurer 1853-54, then as Clerk in the Pension Office, Washington, D.C. 1855-56. He returned to New Hampshire and was a state legislator 1858-59, then a State Senator 1859-61. In 1861, he was commissioned a Colonel in the 11th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He returned to military service, commanding the 11th New Hampshire in the Battle of the Wilderness, Fredericksburg, Virginia was captured May 6, 1864 and was exchanged on August 4, 1864. For his military service he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he joined the Republican Party, served as New Hampshire Secretary of State 1865-67, then won election as State Governor and served 1867-69. In retirement he served as Naval Officer for the Port of Boston and published two books, “History of Warner” and "In the Orient" a record of a tour through Europe and the east in 1882. There is a statue monument to his honor in Warner, New Hampshire.
