Wehmeyer, 94 of Fremont and formerly of Arlington who died April 19, 1990 at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County. Rev. Michael Rogers officiated. Military graveside services were conducted by members of the Arlington American Legion and the Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Walter H. Wehmeyer was born July 16, 1895 in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up in Rosebud, Missouri and moved to the Arlington area in 1916 where he farmed for 54 years, before retiring. He moved to Fremont in 1975. He joined the United States Army in September, 1917 and served during World War I. He was in five major battles in France and served in the occupation of Germany. He returned in August, 1919 and was the last World War I veteran in Washington County to return home. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Arlington and was on several church committees. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Laymans League, was a choir member and taught Bible class. He was a 70 year member of the Arlington American Legion Post No. 71 and the Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No, 8332. He was a four year post commander there. He married Elma Hilgenkamp December 8, 1920, north of Arlington. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Carolina Karstedt Wehmeyer; a brother, Henry; and sisters, Ella Wehmeyer, Ida Wehmeyer and Katie Kruger. Other survivors include a son, Dorwin of Denver, Colorado; two daughters, Bernice (Mrs. Raymond) Grosse of Cedar Bluffs and Geraldine (Mrs. Francis) Tank of Fremont; three brothers, Theo Wehmeyer of Owensville, Missouri; George Wehmeyer of Rosebud, Missouri; and Herman Wehmeyer of Cuba, Missouri; six sisters, Emma Scheer of Nickerson, Marie Sander of Jefferson City, Missouri; Hulda Linenbroeker of Rosebud, Missouri; Helen Blumenschein of Marysville, Ohio; Alma Mueller of Maumee, Ohio and Ruth Wehmeyer of St, Louis, Missouri; four grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Melvin Scheer, Richard Scheer, Marlen Wolf, Dennis Wolf, Delmer Wolf, Gary Hilgenkamp and Rollyn Hilgenkamp. Helen Hilgenkamp was organist, Memorials have been established to the church, the Lutheran Hour and the Lutheran Family Service. Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington was in charge of arrangements. Funeral Folder WALTER HENRICH CHRISTIAN WEHMEYER Walter Wehmeyer, the son of Herman and Carolina (Karstedt) Wehmeyer, was born July 17, 1895 in St. Louis, MO. He was baptized on July 17, 1895 at Zion Lutheran Church in St. Louis. He attended parochial school at St. John's Lutheran Church at Drake, MO and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith there on April 4, 1909. Walter grew up at Rosebud, MO and in 1916 he moved to Arlington, NE. He served in the U.S. Army during WWI and was in 5 major battles in France. After the war, he participated in the occupation of Germany. Walter entered the service on September 17, 1917 and was discharged on August 29, 1919. He was the last WWI veteran in Washington County to return home. On December 8, 1920, he was joined in Holy Matrimony with Elma Hilgenkamp at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Arlington. They farmed north of Arlington for 54 years before moving to Fremont in 1975. Walter was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on various committees of the church. He was on the finance committee for 10 years, treasurer for 4 years, was a choir member and taught Bible class. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Layman's League. Walter was a 70 year member of the Arlington American Legion Post #71 and was post commander for 4 years. He was also a member of the Arlington V.F.W. Post #8332. Walter passed from this life on Thursday, April 19, 1990, at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County at Fremont, NE, at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 3 days. He is survived by his wife, Elma; son and daughter-in-law, Dorwin and Esther Wehmeyer of Denver, CO; daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Raymond Grosse of Cedar Bluffs and Geraldine and Francis Tank of Fremont; 3 brothers, Theo of Owensville, MO, George of Rosebud, MO and Herman of Cuba, MO; 6 sisters, Emma Scheer of Nickerson, Marie Sander of Jefferson City, MO, Hulda Linenbroeker of Rosebud, MO, Helen Blumenschein of Marysville, OH, Alma Mueller of Maumee, OH and Ruth Wehmeyer of St. Louis, MO; four grandsons and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry; sisters, Ella and Ida Wehmeyer and Katie Kruger.
