Description	:	Walter H. Matteson, age 98, of Watertown, SD, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor Janet Miller officiating. Music will be furnished by Judy Everson as soloist accompanied by Marcia Jelsma. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Pallbearers will be Walter's grandsons, Jay Anderson, John Hurney, Trevor Matteson and Nathan Matteson, and his great-grandsons, Gage Anderson and Max Anderson. The family requests memorials to be designated to Prairie Lakes Hospice, P.O. Box 1210, Watertown, SD 57201. Walter Henry Matteson, son of William and Mary (Biermeir) Matteson was born on October 23, 1918 in Elroy, Wisconsin. He attended school through the eighth grade and then took a job with WPA following his father's injury. On December 30, 1941 he entered the United States Navy and trained on the Great Lakes, near Illinois. Walter served on the USS Medussa at Pearl Harbor and in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class on October 29, 1945. On April 28, 1948 Water married Margaret J. Larson at the Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown. The couple lived in Watertown where they raised four children. Walter worked as route driver at Culligan, and worked part time at Coca Cola. He owned and operated Matteson Trucking for 20 years. He then worked for the City of Watertown where he drove the compactor at the landfill from 1968-1984. Walter attended Grace Lutheran Church and was a member of Frank H. Adams Post 750 of the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening. He continued to garden through the summer of 2016. Walter is survived by his children, Reid (Jylan) Matteson of Sioux Falls, Lynette Anderson of Watertown, Tracy (Bill) Hurney of Sioux Falls, and Brian Matteson of Watertown; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eileen Matteson of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Matteson on November 17, 2011; three brothers, Marion, Carl and Glen; three sisters, Erma Tassler, Hazel Chap and Irene Doggett; and his son-in-law, Ronald Anderson. - Wight & Comes Funeral Home
