Morigeau Sr., 92, of St. Ingatius was to be celebrated Wednesday, June 28, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with the Rev. Gus Schmidt, S.J., as celebrant. Interment with military honors was to follow in St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Morgeau died Sunday, June 25, 1995, at his home. He was born July 12, 1902, to John and Matilda Gebeau Morigeau at Ravalli, where he attended school. He also attended schools at Cushman, Wash., and at Haskell, Kan. After graduation, Walter served from 1922 to 1925 in the U.S. Army, where he played in the Army band. He was a runner and tried out for the Olympics at the San Francisco Presidio in 1925. Returning home, he played for dances and organized his own group, "The Cowboy Band," which played in various neighboring communities. During this time Walter also worked as an auto mechanic and truck driver. In 1927 Walter and Helen John were married. They continued to play for dances, Helen on the piano and Walter played saxophone and Clarinet. During the Depression, Walter worked at various jobs including work at CCC camps. He then moved to the Dixon Agency where he worked for the government as a mechanic. In 1938, he served his first term on the tribal council, of which he was a council member for a total of 18 years. He was also a member of the Tribal Credit Committee for four years. In 1944, Walter purchased the allotment of his grandparents, Alex and Rosalie Finley Morigeau, near Arlee, where he ranched. After retiring in 1967, he and Helen moved to St. Ignatius. Walter served as a member of the Arlee School Board for nine years, as well as on the St. Ignatius Community Hospital Board. In June 1990, the Salish & Kootenai College conferred an honorary associate of arts degree upon him in recognition of his contributions to Native American studies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Survivors include two sons, Walter Morigeau and wife Beverly, Puyallup, Wash.; and Alexander "Sam" Morigeau and wife Edith, Ronan; five daughters, Natalie Rasmussen and husband Howard, Missoula; Yvonne Jean Ciraulo, San Jose, Calif.; Barbara Schliep and husband Bob, Ronan; Grace Hamilton and husband Mac, Reno, Nev.; and Maria Robinson and husband Mike, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Letha Shea, Otis Orchards, Wash.; Alma Leudtke, Pablo; Laura Matte and Lorena Miller, both of Polson; and Delia Hart, Veradale, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews and a special longtime friend, Hazel Zumwalt, St. Ignatius. Arrangements are by Riddle Family Funeral Chapel of St. Ignatius.
