Fischer, better known as Walt to his family and friends was born August 9, 1919, on a farm near Tripp, south Dakota, to Fred and Pauline (Frey) Fischer, the fifth of eight children. Fischer, better known as Walt to his family and friends was born August 9, 1919, on a farm near Tripp, south Dakota, to Fred and Pauline (Frey) Fischer, the fifth of eight children. In, 1930, he moved with his family to a farm north of Quinn, South Dakota. He grew up there and received his education in the rural school. He was united in marriage to Grace Goodsell on November 28, 1940, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Quinn, South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and after his discharge he returned to the Wall area. He was a supervisor for the Eastern Pennington County Highway Department. He served as Pennington County Commissioner from 1962 until 1966. In the early 1960's he and his wife, Grace, owned and operated the Star Café and Conoco Station in Wall. For the past twenty years Walt was a private contractor in the construction and painting business. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Carroll McDonald American Legion Post No. 246, of which he served as Commander for one term. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Grace, of wall, two sons, Norman Fischer of Malibu, California and David Fischer of Hartford, South Dakota, three daughters, Arline (Mrs. Bruce) Hammer of Pierre, South Dakota, Charlotte Fischer of Hayes, South Dakota, and Rita (Mrs. Todd) Morris of Chevy Chase, Maryland; eight grandchildren, four sisters, Esther Payton of Granada Hills, California, Hattie Curran of Sand Diego, California, Dorothy Rockstad of Mesa, Arizona, and Phyllis Denke of Hot Springs, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; two brother; Helmuth and Raymond Fischer; and one sister, Elsie Rosentretter.
