Herman was born April 14, 1937, and was raised in Gloucester County, Va., a sixth generation native. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wyndham and Lida Ruth Hogg. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Nancy McBride Hogg; his children: Robin Hogg Huddle, her husband, David, and their children, Madeline and Meredith of Fredericksburg, Va.; James Daniel Hogg of Newport News; Jason Forrest Hogg of New York City; and Lesley Ruth Tyler Hogg at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Also, he is survived by his Aunt Tyler Hogg Harris, 93, of Saunders Nursing Home, his sister, Carolyn Hogg Treyz, and his brother, Charles Francis Hogg, his wife, Barbara, and their daughter, Sarah, all of Gloucester County. Graduating from Randolph-Macon College in 1960, Herman started his career teaching and coaching at Hampton Roads Academy and was there until 1968. Herman talked fondly of his years at HRA. After this, he went to work at Strawberry Banks for Bill Ferguson, now deceased, a person he held in high regard. He was admitted to University of Richmond Law School; but, chose another path. That path took him to Florida State University where he graduated with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. While there he became a "scratch" golfer, walking 36 holes most days. After graduating from FSU, he moved back to Virginia to continue his career as a restaurateur. He owned several restaurants on the Peninsula and is best known for Herman's on Mercury Boulevard, in Hampton and Herman's Harbor Restaurant at the end of Deep Creek Road in Newport News. He was a renown caterer and during his later years, he worked at Johnson Mortgage Company. Herman was president of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, at R-MC. While a student at R-MC, he coached summer Little League baseball in Gloucester County. He served as president of the Peninsula Restaurant Association. He was a member of the Virginia Tourism Bureau, the Peninsula Homebuilders Association, SKAL, Hampton Elks Club, and the "Do Nothing" Club. He was a longtime member of the James River Country Club where he served on various committees. He was an avid golfer and was particularly proud of winning the Gin Championship. Herman enjoyed good food, travel, golf, sports, and gaming. He loved the company of family and friends. He loved to laugh, tell a good story and have a good time. Herman never met a stranger. He loved his children. The family extends a heart-felt thank you to the many friends, former students, Hospice of Gloucester and of Newport News and the staff at The Newport for providing encouragement and support during his illness. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, at Hogg Funeral Home, Route 17, Gloucester Point. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, Route 17, Gloucester County. Burial will follow at Abingdon Church Cemetery.
