Walter was born on Jan. 9, 1927, the son of Maurits and Tekla Monson. He attended country and public schools in Big Sandy and gradu-ated from Big Sandy High School in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and honorably discharged in 1946, after having served in Japan. Upon his discharge, he returned to Big Sandy and farmed with his dad and sister. He married Darlene H. Handford in 1949, and they continued farming until he fully retired in 2006. They moved to Great Falls in the fall of 2010. Walter was a self-taught mechanic. He maintained a well-stocked shop and kept all of his farm machinery and personal vehicles in top-running shape. He also worked on many of his neighbors' machinery. There was nothing he couldn't fix. He was instrumental in forming the Ihmsen Well Association and served on the board of directors for many years, helping to maintain a good source of drinking water for the surrounding area. In his younger years, he and Darlene loved playing cards with their neighbors and going to country dances at Kenilworth Hall. He also obtained his private pilot's license, bought a small plane and just flew for the pure pleasure of it. He and some of his pilot buddies partially escorted the 1963 State Class B championship boys basketball team back to Big Sandy after their big win. In his later years, he became an avid baseball fan, watching as many games on television as he could find. His favorite team was the Chicago Cubs. Walter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Darlene, of Great Falls; daughter Patricia (Verlin) Reichelt of Big Sandy; daughter Connie (Chuck) Simpson of Lakeland, Minn.; and two grandsons, Kyle Simpson of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Ryan Simpson, of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harry Monson; and his sister, Ethel Johanssen. Memorial contributions in Walter's honor may be made to Peace Hospice, Big Sandy Senior Citizens Center, or the charity of one's choice .
