Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.Walter James Cletus Sluka was born April 20, 1926 in Kimball, SD, the fourth child to Adolph John and Mary Christine (Svoboda) Sluka. Shortly after Walter's birth, he was accepted for "care and keeping" by his Aunt Anna (Svoboda) and her husband Lewis Leiferman who were without children and in consideration of Mary's poor health at the time of Walter's birth. In the Spring of 1935, Walter returned to his mother, father, and five siblings. He attended Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell, SD and in the summer of 1943 he returned to the Leiferman Family farm in Brule County, SD. There he attended and graduated from Chamberlain high School in 1944. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the Army where he received Infantry Training at Camp Fannin, TX. He was then deployed, via an unescorted troop ship, to the Philippine War Theater for the recapture of Manila. There he became afflicted with Polio in both legs. He was evacuated to Fitzsimons General Hospital in June of 1945 near Denver, CO., where he received paraplegic treatment for about a year. After which, he was released, discharged, and placed on Disabled Veteran Status. He returned to the Leiferman household in Brule County for recovery, some of which he achieved to the extent that he continued his education at Creighton University in Omaha, NE, University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD, Loyola, and other California University Campuses and was awarded degrees in various endeavors. He traveled the U.S. visiting campuses and posting his beliefs on their bulletin boards. He drove through Baha in Mexico, Canada's Arctic Circle, and Alaska until his polio returned with complications requiring multiple weekly treatments. He was treated and cared for in the V.A. Hospitals and Assisted Living in South Dakota. Walter leaves no children, but the memory that he "accepted his life without complaint and made the most of it" will live on as an example!His family commends the care and facilities provided to him by the Lewis and Anna Leiferman and especially to Dwayne and Lucille Leiferman who worked with and helped him so much especially in his later hears. They are a godsend!Walter passed away on September 19, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD at the age of 83 years. Survivors include his brothers Virgil Sluka of Omaha, NE and Jacob Sluka of Tacoma, WA, and sister Catherine Rew of Covington, IN. Preceding him in death were his parents;
