Description	:	Walter J. Bauer, 85, Whitewood, SD, and formerly of Eureka, SD, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center. Walter John Bauer, son of Pauline (Pfeiffer) and Rinehardt Bauer, was born at Zeeland, ND on February 1, 1922. He was raised near Zeeland and attended rural school. He then worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota and Montana. He served his country in the United States Army, being inducted November 10, 1944. Walter John Bauer, son of Pauline (Pfeiffer) and Rinehardt Bauer, was born at Zeeland, ND on February 1, 1922. He was raised near Zeeland and attended rural school. He then worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota and Montana. He served his country in the United States Army, being inducted November 10, 1944. Following his honorable discharge on September 5, 1946 he settled at Igloo, SD where he held a Civil Service position and farmed. He married Lavina K. Mitzel at Eureka in the early 1950's. In 1955, they moved to Renton, WA where Walter took a millwright position for Boeing Aircraft. He retired after 30 years of service to Boeing. Mrs. Bauer died on July 17, 1967, leaving Walter the sole responsibility of raising there two sons. He remained in Washington until 1990, when he moved to Eureka. In 1995 he moved to Graham, WA and in 1997 settled in Whitewood. He lived there until 2002, when he moved to the Belle Fourche Assisted Living Center. Since December 2004, Walter had stayed at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center. He was a lifelong Lutheran. His hobbies included reading and tinkering on things in his home. Mr. Bauer is survived by 2 sons-Ricky W. Bauer of Graham, WA and Timothy R. Bauer; 1 brother Charles (Ruth) Bauer of Sturgis, SD; 2 sisters—Gloria Buchanan of Eugene, OR and Doris Vanness of Rock Valley, Iowa; and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 3 brothers, and 1 sister. His funeral service will be Saturday, October 13, 2007 at Lien-Straub Funeral Home, Eureka, with Pastor Linda Wahlstrom officiating. Interment, with military graveside rites, follows at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Eureka.
