He died of congestive heart failure, according to his family. Born Nov. 24, 1917 in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Walter J. Hatcher and Ruth Hatcher Skarban. He resided in Stamford from 1966 to 1982. He also maintained a home in Brookfield, until he moved to Santa Fe, N.M. in 1982. Mr. Hatcher's career spanned 40 years, of which the last 30 years were in Connecticut. He worked as the human resources manager for Doman Helicopters and Sperry Rail Services, both formerly in Danbury. He joined Pitney Bowes as a manager of human resources in the late 1950s. He then spent a year as the president of Jobs, Inc., an organization that provided job training to disadvantaged individuals. He was appointed to President Ronald Reagan's Grace Commission in the early 1980s. For the last 15 years of his career he was the Worldwide director of industrial relations and assistant to the chairman of the Board of Directors at Pitney Bowes in Stamford. He retired 21 years ago. Mr. Hatcher was the former president of the Danbury Lions Club. In addition, he served as president of the Connecticut Personnel Association and of the Personnel Association of Southwest Connecticut. Mr. Hatcher was also the president of the Industrial Relations Council of Connecticut and served on the board of the National Association of Manufacturers. He was the president of the Connecticut Chapter American Lung Association, and went on to serve as the national president of the association. In Santa Fe, he was on the Community Advisory Board of KNME-TV and on the steering committee of Greer Garson Theatre at the College of Santa Fe. He was on the board of directors of the Santa Fe Desert Corale and served on the Joint Committee of Respiratory Therapy. He was on the board of Trustees and then served as president of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. In 2000, he served as president of El Castillo Residents' Association. He is survived by two sons, Walter J. Hatcher III of Bridgewater and Robert E. Hatcher of Santa Fe, N.M.; and three grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in January 2003 by his wife of 61 years, Jean Hatcher; and in March 2003 by a daughter Elizabeth Hatcher. A memorial service will take place at a later date at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookfield. At that time his ashes will be inurned in the church's memorial garden.
