James, prominent and beloved citizen of Mathews, died at his home at Mobjack last Sunday night after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at Grace M. E. Church on Wednesday afternoon by Rev. R. R. Burnette, assisted by Rev. L. C. Moore and the remains laid to rest in Kingston cemetery. A large number of sorrowing friends attended both services. And the large number of beautiful floral tributes bore further evidence to the esteem in which he was held. Captain James was 62 years of age and a native of Mathews County. He was for many years engaged as a member of James Brothers in the oyster planting business in which he was quite successful. In all the walks of life Captain James set an example well worthy of emulation by those who come after him, and his death entails a serious if not irreparable injury to his community and a great loss to the county. A man of unusually fine intelligence, strong convictions and a real sense of consciousness of civic duties he was a friend to all worthy causes and ever ready to give of his time, energy, money and ability to their advancement. He was ever a leader in the religious work of his community and section and gave generously to the church and its allied causes. He was a member of Grace M. E. Church and a leader in its Sunday School. A good man and a substantial and valuable citizen has been lost in the passing of Captain James. "May he rest in peace." Besides his widow, Mrs. Mary P. James, he is survived by one son, W. R. James, two daughters, Mrs. W. B. Elwang, and Miss Harriet James, three brothers, Messrs. Jefferson, Franklin and Dallas James, and one sister, Miss Laura James.
