Hasselman and Emma Petzoldt Hasselman on April 4, 1919, at Worms (Merrick County), and passed away Jan. 17, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, at the age of 79 years, 10 months, and 13 days. He was one of 9 children in the family. At a young age Walter moved with his family to Grand Island where he attended school and was raised in the Lutheran faith. Times were hard and he learned to enjoy the simple things in life; good friends, family, and the beauty of the outdoors. As a young man, he worked as an apprentice to become a dental technician. On Sept. 21, 1942, Walter entered the Army at Ft. Crook. His civilian profession as a dental technician qualified him to work in a medical corp in the Army. It was war time and Walter found himself amidst the turmoil, death and destruction at Pearl Harbor. We can only imagine what he may have seen or experienced as that part of his life experiences remained forever hidden in his mind, things that were so horrible that he could never share them with anyone and things that made the remainder of his life a constant battle. Walter was honorably discharged from the Army at Battle Creek, Mich. in 1943. On June 6, 1943, Walter married Ruth Wingard. Two sons, Don and Dennis, were born to this union. In the early 1950's Walter moved his family to York, where he owned and operated the York Dental Lab. He was skilled in his trade, and worked for many dentists in the area. You might be surprised how many of you or your relatives might have dentures or crowns precisely made by Walter. In the early 1970's Walter's health made it impossible to continue his business. Eventually he moved to Fairmont where he enjoyed the friendliness of a small town. He often was at the Tower Cafe early in the morning to help Jerry put on the first pot of coffee. Evenings you would find him joining friends for a chat at the Legion. A familiar site was Walter in his blue 1951 Dodge pickup or when eye sight prevented his driving, you would see him riding his bike or walking all over town. As his health continued to deteriorate, Walter moved to McPherson, Kan., to live with his son, Don. While there he was able to enjoy gardening; pumpkins were his specialty; the donut shop, and meeting new friends. He loved people and strangers were only friends that he hadn't yet met. Walter had Parkinson's disease which soon required constant monitoring by skilled medical people, so for the last two years, he has been a resident of the Nebraska Soldier and Sailor's Home in Grand Island. This past summer, he was crowned Watermelon King, because of the number of large watermelons that he grew in his garden there and shared with other residents and staff. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma; five brothers, Carl, Herman Jr., Alfred, Chris, and Ernest; two sisters, Helen and Linda, and his son, Dennis. He is survived by one sister, Emma Hemmerling; his son, Don, daughter-in-law, Mary; three granddaughters, Anne, Amy, and Christine; and four great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19, with Mabrey Miller officiating. Music was provided by York College singers who sang "Ho Tears in Heaven," "Walking Alone at Eve," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "Sweet Bye and bye," and "There is a Habitation." Casket bearers were Kermit Hasselman, Haroln Hasselmann, Jerry Hasselman, Ron Perry, Jerry Gangstad and Dave Seggerman. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery with military graveside services by Lt. Forbes Fairmont American Legion Post No. 21. Father of Dennis and Don Hasselman.
