It was a privilege and joy to have him with us these few months. Though he turned 96 last September, he was in relatively good health until his strength gave way and he passed quickly and peacefully. The youngest son of William and Gladys (Carson) Anson, Walter was born at the family farm near Orchard on Sept. 25, 1921. He was welcomed by three siblings, Henrietta, Ruth and Theron, and later joined by another sister, Sarah. Aside from a few months spent in Mitchell, S.D., the family lived on the Orchard farm, where he remained until after his marriage. On Oct. 8, 1946, Walter married Dorothy Mae Cole at her parents’ home near Page. Their marriage lasted 66 years until her death on June 17, 2012. To the marriage four children were born: Gwendolyn Marie, Wayne Melvin, Charles Martin and Danny M. The family lived first on his parents’ farm near Orchard, then on the Ralph Ernst farm on the Eagle Creek north of O’Neill. Later the family moved to a farm on the south bank of the Ponca Creek, midway between Bristow and Lynch. In 1959 the farmstead flooded. So with a desire to better the family’s financial situation, Walter relocated to Grand Island, where they lived for many years. In December 2011, when Dorothy’s health required round-the-clock supervision, she and Walter relocated to Superior, Ariz. Later he relocated with his daughter to two homes on the Texas coast east of Corpus Christi, where he lived until displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Walter loved farming but worked in diesel mechanics, then as a custodian until he retired at age 65. Upon retirement he began working at Thelander’s in the hay fields and at the elevators. Returning to farm work energized him and he continued for nearly 10 years. In the following years Walter took up woodworking and quilting. He made quilts for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other family members. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Walter is survived by his daughter, Gwendolyn Doane of Grand Island and Aransas Pass, Texas; his three sons and their wives, Wayne and Patti Anson, Charles and Shawn Anson, and Danny and Sarah Anson, all of Grand Island; and his sister, Sarah Clay of Bassett. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three siblings, one grandson and one great-grandson. The memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Third City Church, 4100 West 13th Street in Grand Island, with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. In the spring, Walter’s ashes will be interred in the O’Neill Cemetery in O’Neill.
