Description	:	Born in Iowa near Muscatine, at 1 year old, 1842, was brought by his parents to what is now Garden Township in Cherokee County, Kansas. Family moved back to Jasper County, Missouri in 1843. Comes of New England Yankee Stock. His Father Charles was an Indian Trader, trading with Osage savages. Walter learned the Osage Language. Treated as one of the family by the Osage Tribe. Resided here all his life except during his service during the Civil War. In 1862, Walter Merrick enlisted with the Sixth Kansas Calvary at Fort Scott, at 20 years old, served until the end of the War. Under Col. James Judson in General Blunt's Army. Detailed as Post scout in civilian dress from Feb. 1863 to his discharge in June, 1866 serving in the hostile country between Fort Smith, Ark. and Fort Scott. He served 3 1/4 years as a volunteer soldier for the North. Wounded in the head which was almost fatal. Married at Fort Scott at the residence of D.M. Brown, Justice of the Peace, during the war, January 29th, 1864, to Lucinda Bryant, a sister to three of his soldier comrades. Lucinda was from Bourbon County, Kansas. Husband of Lucinda (Bryant) Merrick - Father of Martha, George, Almira, Albert, Adelia (Dea), Charles Frank, Orville, Hattie and Mary May In 1865 Settled in Pleasant View Township, owning a very fine farm and home on Cow Creek purchasing 160 acres and had 340 acres and all in the very best improved condition; deals considerably with stock and owned some of the finest thoroughbreds in the county - Walter believed this is naturally a great fruit country and all that stands in the way of its proving success is lack of attention. Well know as a civic leader. Served on the school Board and helped to build several townships. Belonged to the First Law and Order organization in Cherokee County, called the Cow Creek Minute Man... Later the Anti-Horse thief Association and was a very involved member. Member of the first Board of Trustees in the Cherokee County High School and a member of the Building Committee. Was one of two (Mrs. Willard of Baxter Springs being the other) of the oldest Settlers of continuous residence in the county before his death. Jane Goforth was housekeeper in 1870 Also married Sophia Hortense Rawlings Rice McQuiston, January 16th, 1890. Also married to Isabella Maggie Hall on Oct. 10th, 1895 in Columbus, Kansas by Justice of the Peace, T.H. Field. Had a servant named Israel Lewis in 1910 and was widowed
