He was born October 1, 1919 in Terril, the son of Benjamin and Frances (Butterfield) Miller. He married Florence "Oodie" Dooley of Estherville in Tacoma, Wash. on Sept. 2, 1942. He was born October 1, 1919 in Terril, the son of Benjamin and Frances (Butterfield) Miller. He married Florence "Oodie" Dooley of Estherville in Tacoma, Wash. on Sept. 2, 1942. Walter attended Drake University and played varsity football & baseball prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps following the USA entering WWII. He served from 1940-1963 in England during WWII, Germany during post war occupation, and with the Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Guam, New Mexico, Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana and California. Following his military career he graduated from Iowa State University with a Masters in Industrial Education. He retired from secondary education teaching in 1978, and from DOT facility management in 1980. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church; ISU Alumni; BPOE 1626; Epsilon Pi Tau Honorary Fraternity; Ames G & CC and Golden Kiwanis. Miller, 70, of Ames died of cancer Monday at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. John's by the Campus Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Burial of Cremains will be at the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Miller was born in Carroll and had lived in Ames since 1963. He retired from facility management for the State of Iowa Department of Transportation and was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Iowa State University Alumni Association, Ames G & CC, Elks Lodge, Golf Collectors Society, and Cardinal Cyclone Club. Survivors include his wife, Oodie; a daughter, Anne Dooley Miller of St. Louis; a son, Maurice of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, Kenneth of Minneapolis, Frank of Omaha and Donald of McCook, Neb..; three sisters, Charlotte Meyers of Lacey, Wash., Rose Boston of Sioux City and Marjorie Deal of Phoenix; and two grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the ISU Foundation, his church or the American Red Cross. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is handling arrangements.
