He was born Aug. 16, 1930 on a farm in Woodbine, Iowa, and attended a one-room country school. In 1948, he graduated from Woodbine High School, where he was active in sports. Read More	CTICM US NAVY Walter "Gene" Johnson, 78, of Solomons, who formerly lived in Laurel, died Jan. 6, 2009 of cancer. He was born Aug. 16, 1930 on a farm in Woodbine, Iowa, and attended a one-room country school. In 1948, he graduated from Woodbine High School, where he was active in sports. He then began a 22-year career in the Navy and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Carolyn Rees, on June 17, 1951. His first Navy assignment was as a seaman radioman on the destroyer USS Henderson, followed by a tour at the Pentagon. He was accepted for communications technicians school and was assigned to a station near Port Lyautey, French Morocco. Assignments followed in Wahiawa, Hawaii, language school at Monterey, Calif., Kamiseya, Japan, Adak, Alaska, and the National Security Agency. He retired from the Navy as an E9 master chief on Oct. 1, 1969. Following his Navy retirement, he worked for the Naval Intelligence Command and then for various contractors before retiring in 1989. He was baptized and joined the Christian Church as a young man. He regularly attended worship services, taught Sunday School, and was a deacon emeritus. During a church revival in 1975, he made a re-commitment and was re-baptized and continued to serve in many capacities. He and his wife were both active in the Gideon ministry. After retirement, he ministered to many families as a hospice volunteer in Laurel, and after moving to Asbury in Solomons, he served as a hospice volunteer at Asbury and in the Solomons community. He received "The Family Service Volunteer of the Year" and the "You Make a Difference" awards from Calvert Hospice in 2008. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Carolyn Johnson; sons David Johnson, of Rapid City, S.D., and Jeffrey Johnson and his wife, Sheryl, of Elkridge; grandchildren Stephen Johnson, and Kristen and her husband, Charles Lease, all of Elkridge, and Kathleen Johnson, of Rapid City; sisters Audrey Babb, of San Diego, Calif., and Juanita Churchill, of Dow City, Iowa; and brother Gail Johnson, of Omaha, Neb. Memorial services were Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at Southern Calvert Baptist Church in Solomons. A second memorial service will be Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at Covenant Baptist Church, 4550 Centennial Lane in Ellicott City. Arrangements were made by Rausch Funeral Home in Lusby.
