Read More	****** The Jefferson Bee Wednesday, June 20, 1928 page one MURDER AND SUICIDE Shooting Affray Sunday Eve Husband of Former Jefferson Girl Kills Her at his Home North of Boone Mrs. Clarence Pepples, better known by folks in Jefferson as Emma Hutchison, was shot and killed by her husband about nine o'clock Sunday night, at the home of her husband's father, four miles north of Boone. The two had separated some time ago and their two children were staying at the Senior Pepples home. She went to that place Sunday evening to see her children, being driven there in the auto with Mr. and Mrs. Eckhoff and their three children. Also in the car was Walter Forster, who was in the front seat with Eckhoff and the little Eckhoff boy. Pepples came up to the car and shot twice at Forster, who slumped forward dead in the seat. Mrs. Eckhoff and Mrs. Pepples, who were in the back seat, jumped out of the car and started to run. Eckhoff tried to stop him, but Pepples drew the gun on Eckhoff and snapped it, but there was no shell in place. Pepples started after his wife, when Fred Miller tried to stop him, but Pepples had loaded the gun again, and commanded Miller to stop or he would kill him. Then he ran on and caught Mrs. Pepples, who was running down a path in the rear by timber, and he killed her with one shot. Then he turned the gun upon himself, sending a bullet thru his head near the ear, and the bullet coming out of the top of his head. He died at the hospital early yesterday morning. Emma Hutchison was born at Woodward, but was raised in Jefferson. The family home was in Greenbrier township awhile, also east of Jefferson. Her mother died here a year ago last September. She was 22 years of age and was wedded to Pepples about four years ago, and they have lived in Boone since that time. There were two small children. The Boone News-Republican said: "Though a number of neighbors heard the ominous reports, John Biggs of this city was the first on the scene. Biggs went to the George Rutherford home, nearby and put in the telephone call which brought Sheriff Charles Morgan and Officer Andrew Flockhart of the Fifth Ward station to the scene. They took charge of affairs, saw that Pepples, who was bleeding profusely, was hurried to the hospital, and called an undertaker to take care of his two victims. "Forster, described by relatives as a friend of Mrs. Pepples, was shot through the chest and possibly through the back. Early investigation had not determined for sure that the latter was the case but a bullet was found lodge in the upper portion of his chest, which is believed to have entered the body from the back.
