Description	:	Walter Bappe was born on a farm in Lawton, Iowa, the third child of George and Minnie Marquart Bappe. His mother was the first teacher in Lawton and classes were held in her home. The family moved to Moville in 1904 and then to Ames in 1914 when he was 15 years old. He played in the Ames Municipal Band at the age of 16 and was blessed with a musical ear and perfect pitch and a beautiful tenor voice. He taught himself to play trumpet, French Horn and Bass Viol. He helped to establish the Ames Band... Read More	Walter Bappe was born on a farm in Lawton, Iowa, the third child of George and Minnie Marquart Bappe. His mother was the first teacher in Lawton and classes were held in her home. The family moved to Moville in 1904 and then to Ames in 1914 when he was 15 years old. He played in the Ames Municipal Band at the age of 16 and was blessed with a musical ear and perfect pitch and a beautiful tenor voice. He taught himself to play trumpet, French Horn and Bass Viol. He helped to establish the Ames Band Shell by soliciting for donations for its creation, where he played the French Horn over many years. At age 18 he enlisted in the Navy during WWl and was discharged in 1919. He worked at Bates Bakery in Ames before and after his military service. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club. His musical career spanned 65 years and he played in various bands covering the five state area. His last gig was playing at Shakey's in Campus Town where the students dubbed him "Slap Happy Bappe" because of his ability to do a double slap on the bass. In 1923, he started work at the Iowa State Highway Commission He became the Supervisor of the Blue Print Dept. and held that position for over 45+ years. He retired but was called back for a few more years. After retirement he devoted all his time to his family, traveling and playing at Shakey's Pizza Parlor. He built the family homestead on Washington Avenue in 1938. He married Irene Berhow of Huxley Oct. 2, 1939 and they raised a family of six children. He added an addition to the home in 1944 and one in 1954. Children: Phillip, Rita, Bruce, Stephen, Dennis and Sue Ellyne. Siblings: Edwin Ray, Charles Everett, David Marquart, Fern Minnie, George Arthur, Glen Richard, Virgil Emerald He developed late onset diabetes at age 77 which culminated in the amputation of both of his legs late in his life and he died in the home that he built in 1981.
