Walter was born on January 15, 1923 in the Vermilion area to first generation Canadian homesteaders; they moved to Cherry Grove when Walter was 10 years old. At the age of 14, he returned to Vermilion to help his grandfather on the farm, until he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Forces when he was 19. In 1945 Walter returned to Cherry Grove where he married Doris Felts. Over his 99 years, Walter kept himself busy! He dairy farmed, ranched, raised and raced chariot ponies, drove school bus, was a part of road and provincial park construction all over Alberta, worked winters at CFB Cold Lake, was Fire Chief at Cherry Grove Fire Department, and before finally retiring, he was the Maintenance Foreman at Cold Lake Provincial Park. He played an instrumental role in starting the Cold Lake Legion, Cherry Grove Credit Union (now Lakeland Credit Union) and Cherry Grove Community Hall & Senior Centre. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed playing baseball (when he was younger), dancing, working with his horses, floor curling and attending jamborees. In 2018, after nearly 75 years, he sold his farm in Cherry Grove and moved to Points West in Cold Lake; these past few months he resided at Bonnyville Long Term Care.
