He attended elementary school in Marysville and lived his entire life in Marion county where he was a coal miner. He married Mary (Pope)~Williams,of Marysville on August 13, 1913 in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife: two sons, William Gilbert Dale Little and Delno Ferris Little, and a brother Gerald Amos Little. Surviving are a son Elmer Pearl Little of Bussey; a daughter Mrs. Maxine Reither, of Detroit Michigan; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven sisters: Mrs. Mae Tucker, Lovilia, Mrs. Arthur Mesecher and Mrs. Elbert Light, Knoxville, Mrs. Edward Wolfe, Ottumwa, Mrs. Francis 'Earl' Parker, and Mrs. Francis Ford, Bussey, Sadie Little, Hiteman, and two brothers Thomas of Knoxville, and Elmer of Bussey. Walter's wife Mary left him in 1921 while she was pregnant with their daughter. Walter raised Elmer and Delno by himself and never remarried. Walter's first great grandson Michael Ray Little recalls seeing Walter shoot a small cinnamon bear near Marysville.
