The Dean's law specialties were Probate Law, Real Property, and Evidence. He knew and loved the law, but his love for the profession of teaching was even greater. He was a quiet and retiring man who welcomed each new class with an enthusiasm that inspired and sustained confidence so essential to success. He was a learned man in the fullest sense of the word. His national reputation was firmly established by his extensive and broad studies in real property law and evidence. However, this was merely his specialty. He was widely read on many subjects and traveled in the leisurely manner of the philosopher and student through the Orient, Europe, and South America (see section on Travel). He was a superb teacher, not only because he was an authority in evidence and real property, but also because he was so widely read and experienced on many subjects that his collateral commentary was fascinating. By temperament and training he possessed an extraordinary ability to teach. There were a number of reasons for his excellence. First, he had a definite object in the classroom. It was not enough for him to expound the subtleties of the law and let those who could grasp them. He considered it his duty to carry the students along. He taught always from the standpoint of the student's ability to understand. He had the extraordinary capacity to lead the exceptional student as far as his abilities would permit, while at the same time giving the average student the essentials of the subject. The Dean was completely in a class by himself. He embraced the Socratic method of teaching law, seated in front of the class. His lectures were in a quiet voice subtly dispensing philosophy with law. When he explained something, it was simple, easy, and you understood him. He kept his students hanging on his words with his quiet voice. There was nobody on the faculty whose grades were more respected than those from the Dean. The Dean was dynamic and forceful in a sort of mild way. You never forgot some of the things he said. He used to emphasize some of the points he made by pounding his fist into his palm and making the statement, "You can't get more than you sue for." He also believed that there was no substitute for knowing the law: "If you want to be in a position to advise your clients as to what's going on, you have to tell them what the law is." For 40 years, young men versed in the law and grounded in the ethics of the profession went forth from his realm of influence to meet the challenges of the world.
