Description	:	He was the son of Walter Wildeboer & Elskeline Boekelman. Just 3 months after his birth, his father died. His mother remarried Gerhard Henry Smidt in 1898. Some time after Walter's marriage to Alice "Anna" Sweers in 1915, he changed his last name to Smidt (from his step-father) and after that always went by "Smidt". Walter Smidt Sr. FORT PECK - Walter Smidt Sr., 73, Brockway, former Laurel resident, died Monday at Fort Peck Reservoir of an apparent heart attack. He was born in Iowa Aug. 1, 1893. He married Anna Sweers in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They homesteaded in Wheat Basin in 1916. They moved to Boyd in 1923, where he operated a pool hall and dance hall. In 1927 they moved to Laurel where he operated a used car and salvage business. In 1934 he worked at the Laurel oil refinery and in 1937 started a plaster contracting firm, which he sold when he retired in 1955. Mrs. Smidt died in 1950 and Mr. Smidt moved to Brockway in 1955. Surviving are two sons, Jack Smidt, Butte, and George Smidt, 1624 Wyoming Ave.; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Kass, Pasco, Wash., and Mrs. Paul Kasten, Brockway; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Assink, Kanawha, Iowa; Mrs. R.C. Blain and Mrs. Lillian Butler, both of Joliet; Mrs. Bert Castelano, Butte, and Mrs. Elsie Bothman, Sacramento, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Laurel Methodist Church. The Rev. John W. Bartram will officiate. Burial will be in Laurel Cemetery. Michelotti - Sawyers Mortuary is in charge.
