Stoeger Jr., 71, of Boelus died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 5, at home. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo. Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements. Walter Stoeger Jr. was born on Oct. 18, 1944, in Grand Island to Walter W. Stoeger Sr. and Vera Young Stoeger. He started grade school in Boelus, then in 1954 the family moved to a farm along the south side of the Middle Loup River near Rockville. He finished grade school at District 55 in Sherman County and graduated from Boelus High School in 1963. He attended Chadron State College, graduating in 1968 with a degree in Biology. During the years that he attended Chadron State with his brothers, he enjoyed being the “big-man-on-campus” for his younger siblings. While at Chadron State, he played football for one year for the Eagles, and baseball for four years. (Balls lost in the snow were ground-rule doubles!) He earned all-conference and all-district honors and was an honorable mention All-American. He was inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. In the summer of 1968, Walt was drafted into the U.S. Army and he served for 15 months in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After his honorable discharge he returned to Chadron and completed a major in Recreation. He worked for Harrington Feed Yards in central Nebraska for a few years and in 1975 began a career as an Environmental Quality Programs Specialist with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality in Lincoln. In 2007, he retired and returned to Boelus. Walt was an outdoorsman all of his life and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and planting trees. He was a dedicated steward of the Stoeger family farm along the South Loup River at St. Michael, land that has been in the family for over 100 years. He enjoyed just about all sports, and among many other activities, competed in the Nebraska State Games for many years. His true passion, however, was always baseball, playing third base for the Boelus team in the Sherman-Howard league for 25 years. Throughout his life, his athletic ability and unfailing sportsmanship won the respect of both teammates and opponents. He was preceded in death by his father in 1976, his mother in 2003, and a niece, Shaylynn Stoeger Hagan, in 2012. He is survived by his brothers, Louis and Nancy of Maywood, Frank and Susan of Grand Island, and sister, Janet and Colin Wilke of Kearney; eight nieces and nephews, Louis and Kristy Stoeger and family, Aaron Stoeger, Chuck Stoeger; Scott Stoeger, Jared Stoeger, Sarah and Geo Overfield, Lydia Wilke and Stuart Wilke; three great-nieces and two great-nephews; aunts, Norine Nielsen and Mildred Young; and many cousins. Although Walt was content in his own company, he truly enjoyed people and was a friend to many. He was a caring brother, brother-in-law, and uncle; his absence will be deeply felt. Rest in peace, big brother, we’ll meet again across the river.
