Walter Swanson was born to Carl Gustaf Swanson and Ellen (Carlson) Swanson on March 16, 1908, on a farm five miles southwest of Valley Springs. Walter Swanson was born to Carl Gustaf Swanson and Ellen (Carlson) Swanson on March 16, 1908, on a farm five miles southwest of Valley Springs. He went to Beaver Bend grade school and graduated from Valley Springs High. Then he farmed in partnership with father, Carl. He married Iola Clauson on June 3, 1936, at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church. In 1950, he purchased a farm near Sioux Falls and farmed there until he retired. He was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church where he was a lifetime member. He served on the church council, building committee and various other church committees. He served many years on the executive board and building committee of the Bethany Home for the aged. Walter served 20 years on the Minnehaha Soil Conservation Distric Board of Supervisors, and many of its committees. He was honored by the SD Association of Conservation Districts, receiving their highest award, Outstanding Supervisor in 1978. He was recognized as a distinguished citizen of the State of South Dakota. He served on the East Sioux and Berg School Boards and was Treasurer of Vallety Springs Township. After retiring, he and his wife traveled all states, Canada, Mexico and nine European countries. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Iola Swanson, Sioux Falls; two sons: Dean Swanson and his wife, Barb, Sioux Falls, James Swanson and his wife, Margaret, Gaylord, Minnesota; one daughter, Judy Helgeson and her husband, Darrell, Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Swanson; two sisters; Armyda Hermansen, Chicago, Illinois, and Margaret Scholten, Valley Springs. He was preceded in death by one sister, Althea Schmidt. Funeral services were held at Beaver Valley Lutherna Church with Rev. Julie Kahl officiating. Alta Olson was organist and Matt Onnen, vocalist. Interment was at Beaver Valley Lutheran Cemetery, rural Valley Springs. Pallbearers were Brian Tordsen, Deborah Koesters, Dean Helgeson, Sonja Rowe, Annike Swanson, Darin Swanson and Benjamin Swanson.
